The Gleaners (Painting)

The Gleaners is the one of my favorite painting. The Gleaners is an oil painting by Jean-François Millet (October 4, 1814 – January 20, 1875) composed in 1857.

It depicts three peasant women gleaning a field of stray grains of wheat after the harvest. The painting is famous for monumentalizing what were then the lowest ranks of rural society.

His painting shows the close relationship between people and the earth. From the three peasant women who are wearing heavy wooden shoes and coarse clothes. We can see a deep religious feeling. In front of survival, human always reverently lower their heads. We understand that rural life could not be idealized at that time. Everybody feel too much pressures of life.

In this painting, Miller tried to lead us to depth of the land. In the open and serene landscape, feel her simple and stubborn life. Also feel Farmers ‘fate between land and their life.
